Three weeks prior to our ValleyCats game fundraiser, I received a call from David at Clinical Prosthetics + Orthotics inviting me to the grand opening of the Art de Cure gallery at CPO on South Lake Avenue in Albany.
What is Art de Cure?
Art de Cure, a recently formed 501 (c) 3, is a collaboration between art and medicine. Art de Cure is a unique concept which brings art to an audience not likely to explore art galleries. Galleries are housed in medical practices and work of regional artists is on display. The host practice chooses the charity that will benefit and Art de Cure curates the shows.
Surprisingly, last year, after reading about Art de Cure in a post on a Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) forum from a woman in California, who had read about this pairing of art with medicine in the journal Lower Extremity Review, I discovered this wonderful opportunity of giving regional artists exposure, while raising much needed funds for charity, was located right here in Albany.
Immediately, I contacted Jackie, president, and Susan, co-founder of Art de Cure, requesting a meeting to discuss the possibility of collaborating on a fundraiser for the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA).
After meeting with Jackie and touring the art gallery at The Endocrine Group on Washington Avenue in Albany, I approached my neurologist, hoping the hospital office space would be a good fit for the next Art de Cure gallery to raise funds for CMT research. Seemed like a win win to me. However, things did not work out with the hospital.
Meanwhile, coincidentally David at CPO begin talking with Jackie about setting up a gallery in his office. Somehow their conversation turned to CMT and Jackie mentioned our prior meeting about trying to organize a benefit for the CMTA.
Now, I am very pleased to announce Art de Cure’s second gallery has opened at the Clinical Prosthetics and Orthotics Office at 149 South Lake Ave. in Albany, NY. We are working together planning the gala event for December 2, 2011 from 5 P.M. to 9 P.M. to benefit STAR™ the CMTA’s Strategy To Accelerate Research initiative to find a treatment and eventually a cure for CMT.
At the first gallery, over half of the art for the event was sold that evening with subsequent sales raising over $12,000 for the American Diabetes Association. So, SAVE THE DATE, invite everyone you know to the party, and stay tuned for more details.
